If you've got a boring pair of shoes lying around or if you love to express yourself in a subtle but bold way, shoe wings are a perfect accessory to make. Don't know where to start? Start here! We will go through every step together.
Project Instructions for Shoe Wings:
Materials Required:
- Felt or 1/4 yard of flannel or quilter's cotton
- Tear-away stabilizer
- Temporary spray adhesive
- 1/4" 2-part grommets
- Craft knife and cutting mat
- Lace-up shoe
Step 1: Prep Fabric for Cutting
• Print the die-line (DL) files.
• Use a temporary adhesive to stick the paper die-line for one wing onto your fabric and cut out the shape.
Step 2: Prep your Stabilizer
• Hoop a piece of tear-away stabilizer.
• Load the shoe wing embroidery file (not the die-line file) onto your machine.
• Use a 75/11 sharp sewing needle.
• Stitch the first dieline onto the stabilizer to mark the placement area.
Step 3: Place your Front Fabric Piece
• Remove the hoop from the machine (do not unhoop your stabilizer), spray your fabric piece using an adhesive spray, and place it on the stitched die-line.
• Re-attach the hoop and stitch the "front piece tackdown."
Step 4: Place your Backing Fabric
• Stop the machine before the "back piece tackdown." Remove the hoop from the machine (do not unhoop the fabric), flip it over, and stick the back fabric piece to the back side of your project.
• For all remaining steps, use bobbins that match your top thread color.
• Re-attach the hoop and embroider the "back piece tackdown," and let the machine stitch the rest of the details.
Step 5: Finish up your Wing
• Once the embroidery is complete, remove the project from the hoop and tear away the excess stabilizer.
• Use a craft knife to cut a small "x" where the grommet should be placed.
• Install the grommet so you can add it to your shoes.
Step 6: Repeat and Create the 2nd Wing
• Repeat all the steps above using the files for the second wing. If you're a seasonal embroiderer, you can make 2 or more at the same time.
Step 7: Give your Shoe some Wings
• Lace your shoes through the grommets on the wings to attach them nd see how fly they look (yes, all puns are always very much intended).
